Choosing between full truckload and less-than-truckload shipping is one of the most common decisions in road freight. FTL works best when you have enough freight to fill a trailer or when cargo requires dedicated handling for security and speed. Transit times are faster because there are no intermediate stops. LTL is ideal for smaller shipments that do not justify a full trailer, allowing you to share truck space with other shippers and reduce costs. However, LTL involves more handling at terminals, which can increase the risk of damage and add transit time. Consider factors like shipment weight, cube, fragility, delivery timeline, and budget when making your choice. Some shippers combine both methods strategically, using FTL for high-volume lanes and LTL for overflow or irregular shipments. Understanding these trade-offs helps you negotiate better rates and keep your supply chain moving efficiently.
